Our History
Gateway has a long history of serving the orphans and vulnerable children of Kenya. Take a look at our progression over the years and commit in your heart to help us reach new heights in the years to come.
2010
Gateway beginning
The heart of the founder Melette Meloy was being changed by missionary trips to Kenya. The people were captivating and the need was great. God was at work before there was a physical school.
2012
First classrooms
Gateway officially opened its doors in 2012 with three classrooms, an administrative office, and a small kitchen area. From these humble beginnings, Gateway to Victory has grown into a thriving educational community dedicated to serving the children of Kericho, Kenya.
2014
Additional classroom building
As the children grew older, Gateway sought to continue nurturing their growth and development. In 2014, with the help of dedicated missionaries, the school expanded by adding two additional classrooms. This expansion provided more space and time to teach and support the children, allowing them to thrive academically, spiritually, and emotionally.
2016
Building donation
A local tea company generously donated a building with two classrooms and administrative areas. Originally intended to serve as a dormitory, the space was instead repurposed to meet the growing need for additional classrooms. This valuable contribution enabled Gateway to expand its capacity and continue providing quality education and care for more children in need.
2018
First School Bus
At one point, the children were being crammed into a mini-van for transport, which became increasingly unsafe as Gateway continued to grow. Recognizing the need for safer transportation, it took over a year of dedicated fundraising to gather enough resources for the purchase of the first school bus. This new bus was a significant milestone, providing a safer and more reliable way for our students to travel.
2019
Piped water
Access to clean water is a daily struggle for many Kenyans, with most families walking miles each day to collect water. Gateway faced similar challenges in its early days. However, God provided a solution by making it possible to have piped water installed at the school. With the addition of a water filtration device, clean and safe water is now readily available for our students and staff, transforming daily life at Gateway and enhancing the well-being of everyone in our community.
Additional grades
Gateway continued to expand its educational offerings, adding grades from PP2 (Kindergarten) up to 6th grade. As the student count approached 300, this growth was made possible through the grace of God and the unwavering support of our incredible sponsors. Their generosity has enabled us to provide a nurturing environment where each child can learn, grow, and thrive.
2020
Land additions
The original 2012 land purchase for Gateway was located in the lower left-hand corner of the property. At the time, we were told that land rarely became available for sale in the area, and expansion would not be possible. Yet, through God’s provision and the generosity of our supporters, additional land and funds became available over the years, allowing us to grow the size of the school and expand our mission to serve even more children.
2021
Classroom Block Completed
To continue investing in these precious children, more classroom space was essential. The construction of a two-story classroom block enabled us to expand further, accommodating more students and enhancing our educational offerings. This new addition also created space for a playground, a volleyball court, and a football field (soccer), providing vital recreational areas for the children to play, socialize, and develop important life skills.
2023
Kitchen & Dining Hall
Initially, the children ate their meals at their desks, and the catering staff prepared food by chopping wood and cooking over open flames. Over time, however, God provided a modern kitchen and dining hall, creating a safe and comfortable environment for both meal preparation and dining. This improvement has significantly enhanced the quality of daily life for our students and staff.
2024
Junior Secondary School
Despite some initial resistance, God made a way for us to acquire a second school property, ensuring the continued growth of the Gateway children. The previously closed school required some renovations but was soon transformed to meet our standards and was ready to open its doors on January 8, 2024. This new addition represents another step forward in our mission to provide quality education and support to even more children in need.
